Excise Policy Case: SC Raps Telangana CM Over His Comments On Bail Granted To K Kavitha

The Supreme Court on Thursday strongly criticized Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy for his remarks concerning the bail granted to BRS leader K Kavitha in connection with the alleged Delhi excise policy scam.

A three-judge bench, led by Justice B R Gavai, expressed concern over Reddy’s comments, which implied a possible deal between the BJP and BRS to secure Kavitha’s bail. The court warned that such statements could create public mistrust and questioned the appropriateness of a chief minister making such remarks.

“Why should they drag the court into political rivalry? We do our duty as per conscience and oath,” the bench stated, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect between institutions and maintaining a distance from political controversies.

Reddy had earlier suggested that Kavitha’s swift bail, compared to the prolonged detentions of other political figures like Manish Sisodia, raised doubts about a possible political arrangement.

The Supreme Court, while addressing these comments, reiterated that it does not pass orders based on political considerations and expects the same respect for its independence from political leaders.

The court’s remarks came during a hearing on a petition seeking the transfer of the trial in the 2015 cash-for-vote scam, in which Reddy is an accused, from Telangana to Bhopal.
