The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the plea of disqualified parliamentarian Afzal Ansari, who is seeking the suspension of his conviction in a Gangster Act case, till October 10, 2023.
A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Dipankar Datta was hearing the matter.
The court had previously directed the Uttar Pradesh Government to respond to the plea. Afzal Ansari, represented by advocate Jubair Ahmad Khan, is challenging the Allahabad High Court’s decision not to stay his conviction in the Gangster Act case.
His conviction by the Court of Additional Sessions Judge, MP/MLA Court, Ghazipur, led to his disqualification as a Lok Sabha member representing the Ghazipur Parliamentary Constituency. Ansari, the brother of former MLA Mukhtar Ansari, was convicted and sentenced to four years in prison in a Gangster Act case by a trial court in Uttar Pradesh. Subsequently, he approached the Allahabad High Court seeking bail, which was granted, but the court refused to stay his conviction in the case.
