The Supreme Court recently issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh Government in response to Afzal Ansari’s plea seeking the suspension of his conviction in a Gangster Act case.
A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Dipankar Datta heard the matter and scheduled it for further hearing on September 25.
Afzal Ansari, represented by advocate Jubair Ahmad Khan, has challenged the decision of the Allahabad High Court, which refused to stay the trial court’s order convicting him in a Gangster Act Case.
As a result of his conviction by the Court of Additional Sessions Judge, MP/MLA Court, Ghazipur, Afzal Ansari was subsequently disqualified as a member of Lok Sabha representing the Ghazipur Parliamentary Constituency.
Afzal Ansari, the brother of Ex-MLA Mukhtar Ansari, received a four-year prison sentence in a Gangster Act case from a trial court in Uttar Pradesh. He later approached the Allahabad High Court, seeking a stay on his conviction in the matter.
While the Allahabad High Court granted him bail, it refused to stay the trial court’s order convicting him in the case.
