Gyanvapi Mosque Management Committee Approaches SC Over Places Of Worship Act

The Gyanwapi Mosque Management Committee has approached the Supreme Court in connection with the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991.

In its petition, the committee seeks to intervene in the ongoing legal proceedings, defending the validity and constitutional standing of the Act.

The Places of Worship Act of 1991, prohibits the conversion of any religious place of worship and mandates that the character of the religious place as it existed on August 15, 1947, must be maintained.

The committee, along with other petitioners such as the Muslim Personal Law Board and Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, has argued that the Act must be upheld in its entirety.

The top court bench led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna was scheduled to hear a batch of petitions on Thursday challenging the PoW act including those questioning the validity of certain provisions of the Act.

However, the hearing has been postponed.
