Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna on Monday administered oath to Justice Joymalya Bagchi as judge of the Supreme Court of India.
Now, the Supreme Court has 33 judges against its sanctioned strength of 34. It now has one vacancy.
Justice Bagchi will have a tenure of over six years in the Supreme court. He will be the CJI in May 2031.
He will assume the office of CJI upon the retirement of Justice K.V. Viswanathan on May 25, 2031.
He will retire on October 2, 2031.
Centre cleared Justice Bagchi’s name on March 10 for appointment as a Supreme Court judge.
In the first week of March, a five-member collegium headed by Chief Justice Sanjeev Khanna recommended his name for Supreme Court.
June 2011: Bagchi was appointed a judge in the Calcutta High Court.
He is the the second from Calcutta High Court after Justice Altamas Kabir to become CJI.
