Justices Anjaria, Bishnoi, & Chandurkar Sworn In As Supreme Court Judges

The Supreme Court of India has regained its full working strength of 34 judges with the swearing-in of Justices N.V. Anjaria, Vijay Bishnoi, and Atul S. Chandurkar.

The oath-taking ceremony was conducted by Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai at the Supreme Court’s Additional Complex in New Delhi.

Swift Appointment Process

The appointments followed a prompt process, with the Supreme Court Collegium, led by CJI Gavai, recommending the three judges on May 26, 2025. The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, approved the recommendations on May 29, 2025, and the judges were sworn in the following day.

Background Of The Appointees

  • Justice N.V. Anjaria: Born on March 23, 1965, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Justice Anjaria served as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court before his elevation to the Supreme Court. He began his legal career in 1988 and has held various judicial positions, including Additional Judge and Permanent Judge of the Gujarat High Court.

  • Justice Vijay Bishnoi: Born on March 26, 1964, in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, Justice Bishnoi was the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court prior to his appointment to the Supreme Court. He enrolled as an advocate in 1989 and served in various capacities, including Additional Central Government Standing Counsel and counsel for various departments in the Government of Rajasthan.

  • Justice Atul S. Chandurkar: Justice Chandurkar, born in 1965, was serving as a judge of the Bombay High Court before his elevation. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2013 and confirmed as a Permanent Judge in 2016. He has authored two legal books and has been recognized for his contributions to constitutional jurisprudence.
