Kejriwal’s Arrest Timing Questioned in Supreme Court

Today, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in the Delhi Liquor Policy case, before the Supreme Court.

While arguing before the Bench which comprised of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Dipankar Datta Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi pointed out that the Enforcement Directorate’s authority to arrest does not equate to an obligation to do so. He stressed the necessity of substantial evidence or a direct link to Kejriwal. The timing of Kejriwal’s arrest after the implementation of the model code of conduct is concerning, considering he was neither accused nor suspected until March 2024. Arvind Kejriwal was arrested on March 21, just before the Lok Sabha elections.

“Liberty is very exceedingly important, you can’t deny that. The last question is with regard to the timing of the arrest, which they have pointed out, the timing of the arrest, soon before the general elections. Last question is regarding the timing of the arrest,”Justice Sanjiv Khanna told the Additional Solicitor General.

The Supreme Court sought the Enforcement Directorate to respond to questions about the timing of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s detention. The matter is next listed on Friday.
