The Supreme Court on Monday stated that it will consider listing the plea of former IPS officer Debasish Dhar, who was nominated by the BJP to contest the Lok Sabha polls from West Bengal’s Birbhum, challenging the cancellation of his nomination papers.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud along withjustices JB Pardiwla and Manoj Misra acknowledged the submissions of senior advocate Nidhesh Gupta, representing Dhar, that Monday marked the deadline for filing the nomination papers.

“I will see the email (seeking urgent listing),” remarked the CJI in response to the senior lawyer’s assertion that the plea needed immediate attention.

Dhar’s nomination papers as a BJP candidate were invalidated after he failed to present the ‘no dues certificate’. He had recently resigned as an IPS officer.

The voting for the Birbhum Lok Sabha seat is scheduled for May 13, 2024.
