Murshidabad Violence: Plea In SC Seeks SIT Probe Into Waqf Amendment Act

Two separate petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a court-monitored investigation into the recent violence in Murshidabad, West Bengal, that erupted during protests against the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025.

The violence, which took place on April 13, claimed three lives and led to significant unrest in the region.

Call For SIT & Judicial Commission

The first petition has been filed by Advocate Shashank Shekhar Jha, who has requested the formation of a Special Investigation Team to probe the incident under Supreme Court supervision. Jha’s plea emphasizes the need for an independent and transparent investigation, alleging lapses in state action.

The second petition, filed by Advocate Vishal Tiwari, seeks the constitution of a 5-member Judicial Enquiry Commission, headed by a retired Supreme Court judge, to investigate the circumstances that led to the violence. Tiwari argues that only a high-level judicial probe can restore public faith and ensure accountability.

Urgent Pleas For State Accountability

Both petitioners have urged the apex court to seek an official report from the State of West Bengal on the Murshidabad incident. They also called for directives to ensure the protection of citizens’ lives and property, especially in communally sensitive regions.

In addition, the petitions request the Court to issue directions against individuals making provocative speeches that could incite further unrest, stressing the need to curb inflammatory rhetoric during such volatile situations.

Court Orders Central Forces Deployment

Following the violence, the Calcutta High Court has already intervened by directing the deployment of Central Forces in the Murshidabad district. This move aims to stabilize the situation on the ground and prevent further escalation.

The violence reportedly broke out during protests against the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025, which has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters. According to reports, what began as a peaceful protest quickly turned violent, leading to clashes, arson, and loss of life.
