Nitish Katara Murder: SC Extends Interim Bail Of Vikas Yadav By 4 Weeks

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted a further 4-week extension of interim bail to Vikas Yadav, who is currently serving a 25-year sentence for his involvement in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case.

The extension allows him to continue caring for his seriously ill mother.

Court Advises Yadav To Seek Remission From Delhi High Court

A bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and N. Kotiswar Singh issued the order and advised Yadav to file a petition with the Delhi High Court for remission of his sentence. The Supreme Court’s order emphasized that the interim bail is temporary and does not affect the ongoing sentence.

Bail Extended On Medical Grounds Relating To Yadav’s Mother

The extension follows repeated bail grants to Yadav based on his mother’s health condition. On May 8, the court reviewed a medical report from AIIMS, which noted that while Yadav’s mother was hemodynamically stable and fit for discharge, there was a possibility she might require surgical intervention to decompress her lumbar spinal canal if her condition worsened.

Earlier, on April 24, the Supreme Court had allowed Yadav to meet his ailing mother on interim bail and had ordered her medical examination by an AIIMS panel.

Bail Conditions Include Restriction On Movement & Contact

The court imposed strict conditions on Yadav’s bail, including:

Restriction to his residence in Ghaziabad.

No contact with witnesses of the case, including the victim’s mother, Neelam Katara.

Submission of a bail bond and surety of ₹1 lakh each.

Vikas Yadav, son of the politician D.P. Yadav, was convicted for the kidnapping and murder of Nitish Katara, whose alleged relationship with Vikas’s sister Bharti Yadav was opposed due to caste differences. Vikas and his cousin Vishal Yadav were sentenced to 30 years without remission by the Delhi High Court, which upheld the life sentences handed down by the trial court. Another accused, Sukhdev Pehalwan, was given a 25-year sentence.

Previous Remission Request Denied

Last year, the Delhi prison authorities rejected Vikas Yadav’s remission plea, citing his unsatisfactory conduct during incarceration, making the Supreme Court’s interim bail the only relief he has received recently.
