Nitish Katara Murder: Supreme Court Seeks UP Govt Response On Vikas Yadav’s Interim Bail Plea

The Supreme Court on Wednesday has sought the Uttar Pradesh government’s response on the interim bail plea of Vikas Yadav, who is serving a 25-year jail term in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case.

Yadav has sought interim bail to attend to his ailing mother.

Grounds For Interim Bail

Yadav’s counsel informed the court that his mother’s condition had deteriorated in February and provided medical documents to support the claim. The mother is currently admitted to Yashoda Hospital in Ghaziabad and is in the intensive care unit.

Court’s Direction

A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan directed the Uttar Pradesh government to constitute a medical board to examine the condition of Yadav’s mother. The medical board will consult with the doctors at Yashoda Hospital and review the medical records. The court has posted the hearing for April 15.

Senior advocate Aparajita Singh, appearing for Nilam Katara, the mother of the deceased Nitish Katara, opposed Yadav’s interim bail plea. Singh questioned Yadav’s conduct, stating that he had visited AIIMS 98 times on medical grounds.

Yadav’s Sentence

Yadav is serving a 25-year jail term without remission for his role in the kidnapping and murder of Nitish Katara. The apex court had sentenced him on October 3, 2016. Yadav’s cousin, Vishal Yadav, was also punished for the crime.

Background Of Case

The murder of Nitish Katara was a high-profile case that drew widespread media attention. Katara was kidnapped and murdered by Vikas Yadav and his cousin Vishal Yadav, who were against Katara’s alleged affair with Bharti Yadav, Vikas’s sister. The duo belonged to different castes, which was the motive behind the murder.
