No Immediate Relief to Arvind Kejriwal, SC Seeks ED’s Response on Plea Challenging Arrest

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to immediately grant relief to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal on plea challenging his arrest in a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam.

Enforcement Directorate

A bench comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta also issued notice to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on his plea against the Delhi High Court’s decision that upheld his arrest in the case.

The court directed the central probe agency to submit its response by April 24 and set the matter for further hearing on April 29, 2024.

Delhi High Court

On April 9, the high court upheld his arrest in the money-laundering case, citing the ED’s limited recourse after he repeatedly ignored summonses and declined to participate in the investigation.

Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma rejected the petition filed by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader challenging his arrest and subsequent detention by the central  investigative agency.

The Case

The case revolves around alleged corruption and money laundering in the formulation and execution of the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22, which was later annulled.

The Delhi Chief Minister was apprehended by the ED on March 21, shortly after the high court declined to shield him from coercive measures by the federal anti-money laundering agency. He is currently incarcerated in Tihar Jail.
