“Not Acceptable That Children Need To Wear Masks To Play Outside”: SC Judge Justice Vikram Nath

Justice Vikram Nath

Supreme Court Judge Justice Vikram Nath on Saturday has raised concerns over the continued requirement for children to wear masks while playing outdoors, calling it unacceptable and urging authorities to reconsider COVID-19-related restrictions.

Speaking at a public event on child welfare and health safety, Justice Nath emphasized that prolonged mask mandates for children in outdoor spaces could negatively impact their physical and mental well-being.

“It is not acceptable that even after so much time, children are still required to wear masks while playing outside. This affects their ability to breathe freely, socialize, and enjoy a normal childhood,” Justice Nath remarked.

Balanced Approach

Justice Nath acknowledged the importance of health and safety, but stressed the need to strike a balance between necessary precautions and children’s right to a normal life. He pointed out that scientific studies and global health guidelines have already relaxed mask mandates in outdoor spaces, especially for children.

He urged health authorities to review existing COVID-19 guidelines and ensure that children are not subjected to unnecessary restrictions, particularly in outdoor settings where transmission risks are significantly lower.

Parents & Experts Support Concern

Many parents and pediatricians have echoed Justice Nath’s concerns, arguing that extended mask mandates for children could lead to:

Respiratory issues

Reduced immunity due to prolonged mask usage

Psychological stress & social anxiety

Medical experts have also highlighted that outdoor spaces with good ventilation pose a much lower risk of virus transmission, making strict mask requirements unnecessary.

Revised Guidelines

Justice Nath’s statement has reignited discussions on modifying COVID-19 protocols in India. Health policymakers may now consider updating mask guidelines to align with the latest medical research and global best practices.

Judge’s remarks serve as a reminder that while pandemic safety measures are crucial, they must be practical, science-based, and considerate of children’s well-being and development.
