Supreme Court Judge Justice Vikram Nath on Saturday has raised concerns over the continued requirement for children to wear masks while playing outdoors, calling it unacceptable and urging authorities to reconsider COVID-19-related restrictions.
Speaking at a public event on child welfare and health safety, Justice Nath emphasized that prolonged mask mandates for children in outdoor spaces could negatively impact their physical and mental well-being.
“It is not acceptable that even after so much time, children are still required to wear masks while playing outside. This affects their ability to breathe freely, socialize, and enjoy a normal childhood,” Justice Nath remarked.
Balanced Approach
Justice Nath acknowledged the importance of health and safety, but stressed the need to strike a balance between necessary precautions and children’s right to a normal life. He pointed out that scientific studies and global health guidelines have already relaxed mask mandates in outdoor spaces, especially for children.
He urged health authorities to review existing COVID-19 guidelines and ensure that children are not subjected to unnecessary restrictions, particularly in outdoor settings where transmission risks are significantly lower.
