Pahalgam Terror Attack
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Supreme Court of India, demanding robust safety measures following the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed 27 lives.
Advocate Vishal Tiwari, who submitted the petition, has urged the Court to mandate steps that will ensure such atrocities are not repeated.
The petition highlights the vulnerability of pilgrims, especially those undertaking the high-altitude Amarnath Yatra. Advocate Tiwari requests “full safety and protection for pilgrims going on the Amarnath Yatra,” stressing that current arrangements fall short of safeguarding worshippers against militant threats.
Bar associations across the region have voiced solidarity and protest in the wake of the April 22 attack.
Jammu High Court Bar Association (President: Advocate K. Nirmal Kotwal) denounced the strike as a “cowardly and inhumane act of violence” targeting innocent civilians. The body has called for a complete Jammu Bandh on April 23 and suspended judicial work to honour the victims.
Srinagar High Court Bar Association (President: Advocate Waseem Gul) labeled the assault “barbaric,” urging all advocates to boycott court proceedings in both the High Court at Srinagar and subordinate courts across Kashmir on April 23 as a mark of respect.
Kashmir Jurists Bar Association, through President Altaf Ganderbali and Chief Coordinator Tajamul Chaudhry, condemned the incident as an “inhuman attack by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists.” They have appealed for a peaceful Kashmir Bandh on April 23, calling citizens to stand united against terrorism.
All three bodies stressed that the attack struck at the very ideals of peace, justice, and humanity. They collectively implored authorities to “swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice and implement preventative mechanisms” to avert future tragedies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cutting short his official trip to Saudi Arabia, returned to India early on April 23. At Delhi airport, he immediately convened a high-level security meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Condemning the Pahalgam attack, Mr. Modi vowed that “those responsible will be brought to justice and will not be spared,” signaling the Centre’s resolve to clamp down on cross-border terrorism and bolster civilian security.
As the court considers the PIL, all eyes are on the judiciary and government agencies to translate these demands into actionable safeguards, ensuring that no pilgrim or tourist ever has to pay the ultimate price for seeking solace in Jammu and Kashmir’s sacred landscapes.
