Delhi Court
The Supreme Court on Friday tagged the intervention petition filed by Samajwadi Party MP Ikra Hasan in support of the Places of Worship Act, 1991.
The bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjeev Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar tagged the petition with original plea and slated the matter for further hearing on February 17.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appeared for Ikra Hasan informed the court that the petition was filed in support of the Places of Worship Act.
In response, the CJI remarked that such petitions are being filed every week.
CJI verbally remarked, ‘Why are so many new petitions being filed? Every week we get one.’
The plea states that repeated filing of suits targeting mosques or dargahs, followed by hasty judicial orders for surveys without any scrutiny whatsoever risks stoking communal tensions and undermining the constitutional values of harmony and tolerance.
