Plea against forced conversions to be heard by CJI-led bench instead of Justice MR Shah bench

CJI, Justice MR Shah, Force Conversion

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will now hear the petition filed by BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Upadhyay against ‘forced religious conversion’ before the Supreme Court.

The PIL was earlier being heard by a bench led by Justice MR Shah. During the last hearing, the bench of Justice Shah at the request of Senior Counsel Sanjay Hegde, had changed the cause title of the case.
The petition which was scheduled to be heard next in February, is now listed for hearing on January 16, Monday before a bench of CJI Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and Justice JB Pardiwala.

The CJI-led bench had earlier sought details of matters pending before different High Courts regarding anti-conversion laws so that it can take a call that all such cases should be transferred to the top court.
