Punjab Govt To SC Over Farmers’ Protest: Court Appointed Committee To Meet Farmers’ Leaders Today

In a fresh development with regard to the ongoing farmers’ protest at Shambhu Border, the Supreme Court on Monday decided to examine January 10 (Friday), a matter with regard to the medical aid to farmers’ leader Jagjeet Singh Dallewal.

The top court bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice NK Singh put the matter for hearing on Friday after Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing the Punjab authorities, informed the Court that protesting farmers had agreed to meet with the Supreme Court-appointed panel at 3 PM Monday to discuss their concerns.

Referring to the ongoing discussions between the parties, the bench remarked: “We hope and pray that better sense prevails.”

The bench noted that it will wait for the outcome of Monday’s meeting before proceeding further with the case.

Sibal informed the bench that they have somehow managed to make the protesting people meet Justice Nawab Singh who heads the High Power Committee.

The bench was considering a contempt petition filed against the Punjab officials for not shifting Dallewal to hospital.

He has been on fast-unto-death since November 26, demanding the Centre statutory guarantee for Minimum Support Price for crops.
