SC Adjourns Hearing On Abbas Ansari’s Bail In Alleged Illegally Meeting In Jail

The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing on Abbas Ansari’s bail plea related to allegations of illegally meeting his wife in Chitrakoot jail.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan has given the Uttar Pradesh government one week to respond to the bail plea, with the case now set to be heard in September.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Abbas Ansari, argued that all visitors were properly verified before entering the jail, countering the allegations.

Abbas Ansari is challenging the Allahabad High Court’s decision to deny him bail. The High Court had issued its order on May 1. After the alleged incident, Abbas Ansari was transferred to Kasganj jail in February 2023. Seven people, including his wife, were arrested in connection with the case. His wife was later granted bail by the Supreme Court.
