The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has recommended the appointment of Additional Judge Justice Siddhartha Roy Chowdhury as a permanent judge of the Calcutta High Court.
The collegium, also comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sanjiv Khanna said that the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues, made this recommendation on April 5, 2023.
The collegium noted that the Chief Minister and the Governor of the State of West Bengal have both concurred with this recommendation. Following the Memorandum of Procedure, consultations were carried out with Supreme Court Judges who are well-versed in the functioning of the Calcutta High Court. Additionally, the collegium took into account the report dated July 3, 2023, from a Committee of two Judges of the Supreme Court, constituted by the Chief Justice of India in terms of the Resolution dated 26 October 2017 of the Supreme Court collegium.
The collegium said on an overall consideration of the proposal it deferred consideration of the proposal.
After thorough scrutiny and evaluation of the materials provided, the collegium decided to recommend Justice Siddhartha Roy Chowdhury, who is scheduled to retire on December 27, 2023, as a permanent Judge of the Calcutta High Court.
