Karnataka high court

The Supreme Court collegium recently recommended the name of Advocate Kurubarahalli Venkatarameddy Aravind as a Karnataka High Court judge.

It was in August 2022 that the High Court Collegium recommended Advocate Aravind’s candidature.

The Supreme Court collegium noted that the said Advocate has an experience of almost 23 years at the Bar and has appeared in cases resulting in 567 reported judgments.

The Collegium in its resolution stated that after initially deferring a decision in the matter in January 2023, it deemed ‘fit and suitable’ Advocate Aravind as a judge of the High Court.

Consequently, the Department of Justice were also considered to assess the merit of the advocate, and found nothing adverse regarding his integrity or character.

It is to be noted further that the collegium resolution considered advocate Aravind’s experience in taxation law and observed that the High Court requires domain expertise in that regard taken the proliferation of such matters.

There is a considerable amount of tax litigation before the Karnataka High Court. There is a need for specialized judges having domain experience in this branch of law. Tax law is integrally connected with various other branches of law including commercial, corporate and personal law. Keeping in view the above aspects and on considering the proposal for his elevation, the Collegium is of the considered opinion that Shri Kurubarahalli Venkataramareddy Aravind is fit and suitable for appointment as a Judge of the High Court of Karnataka,” the resolution stated.
