The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, convened on March 6, 2025, to deliberate on appointments to the Supreme Court.

The panel assessed the credentials of Chief Justices and senior puisne judges from various High Courts, considering factors such as merit, integrity, and judicial competence.

Collegium Recommendation

Following a thorough evaluation, the Collegium recommended the elevation of Justice Joymalya Bagchi, currently serving as a Judge at the Calcutta High Court, to the Supreme Court of India. Justice Bagchi, with over 13 years of experience on the bench, has gained extensive expertise across multiple areas of law, making him a suitable candidate for this prestigious position.

Judicial Legacy & Representation

The Collegium also highlighted that since the retirement of Justice Altamas Kabir in 2013, no Chief Justice of India has hailed from the Calcutta High Court. This appointment seeks to ensure fair representation and maintain a balance within the judiciary.

Future Chief Justice of India

As per the judicial succession framework, Justice Bagchi is poised to become the Chief Justice of India upon the retirement of Justice K.V. Viswanathan in May 2031. His tenure as CJI is expected to continue until his retirement on October 2, 2031.

With more than 6 years in the Supreme Court before assuming the highest judicial office, Justice Bagchi’s contributions are anticipated to significantly influence Indian jurisprudence.
