The Supreme Court collegium recently recommended the appointment of two lawyers, N Senthilkumar and G Arul Murugan as judges of the Madras High Court.
It was in August 2022 that the Madras High Court recommended the candidatures of the two lawyers.
In May 2023, the collegium considered their recommendation but deferred taking a stand as it requires the High Court collegium to go through issues flagged by the Central Government and to give its final word on their suitability.
The Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, SV Gangapurwala in June this year considered the government’s inputs and forwarded the High Court collegium recommendation to the Supreme Court collegium affirming the candidatures suitability as a judge.
About
The resolution stated that N. Senthilkumar has an experience of over 28 years whereas G Arul Murugan has an experience of over 24 years at the bar.
It is to be noted that N. Senthilkumar belongs to the Scheduled Caste (SC) Community and Murugan to the Other Backward Class (OBC) category.
In this regard, the Supreme Court collegium stated, “that their appointment to the High Court of Madras will enhance the representation on the Bench to marginalized communities.”
