The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice Shree Chandrashekhar as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

The decision was taken at its meeting on August 25, 2025.

Senior-Most Judge To Succeed CJ Alok Aradhe

Justice Chandrashekhar, currently serving as a judge of the Bombay High Court, is the senior-most judge after Chief Justice Alok Aradhe, who will retire in April 2026. Following his retirement, Justice Chandrashekhar is expected to take over the top position in one of the country’s most prominent High Courts.

Academic & Professional Journey

Born in May 1965, Justice Chandrashekhar earned his law degree (LL.B.) from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi, in 1993. Later that year, he enrolled with the Delhi State Bar Council and began his legal practice in the national capital.

Over nearly two decades as an advocate, he handled both criminal and civil matters and appeared in approximately 3,500 cases, including several before the Supreme Court. Notably, he was counsel in nearly 140 reported Supreme Court judgments, establishing himself as a respected name in the legal fraternity.

Elevation To The Bench

Justice Chandrashekhar joined the judiciary in January 2013 as an Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court and was made a permanent judge in June 2014. His administrative experience includes serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court from December 29, 2023, to July 4, 2024.

Transfers Across High Courts

After his tenure in Jharkhand, Justice Chandrashekhar was transferred to the Rajasthan High Court in July 2024. He moved to the Bombay High Court on July 20, 2025, where he now holds seniority among the judges.

Justice Chandrashekhar is scheduled to retire on May 24, 2027, giving him nearly two years to serve as Chief Justice once appointed.
