The Supreme Court has recently declined to entertain a plea addressing road safety concerns nationwide, stating that the requested reliefs are too comprehensive to be addressed in a single judicial petition.
A bench comprising Justices SK Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia noted that the majority of issues raised in the plea pertain to Tamil Nadu, suggesting that the petitioner seek appropriate relief from the state high court.
The petitioner, a resident of Tamil Nadu, emphasized that the plea aimed to address road safety, highlighting the alarming occurrence of over 5 lakh accidents annually in the country.
In response to the petitioner’s assertion that remedies for road accident cases aren’t easily accessible, the bench acknowledged the coordinated efforts in streamlining accident cases.
Regarding the wide range of reliefs sought, including the removal of illegal structures by the state, the bench remarked that while the petitioner may have good intentions, the scope of the requested relief is too extensive for resolution through a single judicial petition.
Upon disposing of the plea, the bench stated that if the petitioner sought relief specific to Tamil Nadu, they were at liberty to approach the high court for redress.
