SC Directs PIL Petitioner To Approach NGT For STP Issue

Supreme Court

The Supreme Court, consisting of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justices P.S. Narasimha and Manoj Misra, refused to entertain a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) requesting directions for all State Governments and relevant authorities to establish sewage treatment plants (STPs).

The bench advised the petitioner to approach the National Green Tribunal (NGT) instead.

Dismissing the PIL, the court stated, “If you want the construction of STPs across the country, you should go to the NGT.”

The PIL sought directives for state governments and their authorities, including pollution control boards, to establish STPs for waste treatment.
