SC Dismisses Plea for Re-Classification of Caste System

Supreme Court

The Supreme Court bench comprising of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice P.S. Narasimha, dismissed a plea seeking directions to the Centre for the re-classification of the caste system.

The plea, filed by an advocate, was deemed an abuse of the legal process, and a cost of ₹25,000 was imposed on the petitioner.

In its order, the court stated, “Invocation of Article 32 of the Constitution has been sought to direct the Centre to frame a policy for re-classification of the caste system. This PIL is an abuse of the court process. We dismiss it and direct the payment of ₹25,000 as cost to the Supreme Court Bar Association. The petitioner must provide a receipt of payment within two weeks.”

The plea was filed by advocate Sachin Gupta, and the court observed that such public interest litigations must be curtailed.
