SC Hearing On ‘Thug Life’: K’taka Govt Responds Amid Language Row

The Karnataka government on Thursday formally informed the Supreme Court that it has not imposed any restrictions on the release of Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life, despite protests from pro-Kannada groups.

In an affidavit, the Siddaramaiah-led administration emphasized its commitment to providing adequate security for theaters screening the film, ensuring a smooth release across the state.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah personally appealed for calm, stating, “While we respect cultural sentiments, we must uphold constitutional values. The law will protect both artistic expression and public order.”

Language Controversy Lingers

The dispute stems from Haasan’s alleged remarks about Kannada “originating from Tamil,” which triggered backlash from regional activists.

While the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) sought an apology, pro-Kannada leader Praveen Shetty clarified his group won’t oppose the release but maintained, “After hurting Karnataka’s sentiments… he should have apologized as per the High Court’s suggestion.”

Political Appeal For Calm

Deputy CM DK Shivakumar urged restraint, stating, “We should respect the Supreme Court’s order… No one should take the law into their own hands. The court is expected to review the state’s assurances in today’s hearing.”

SC will assess security arrangements as the film’s release date approaches.
