SC Orders Deportation of 17 Foreigners from Assam Detention Center

The Supreme Court, on Thursday, ordered the Union of India to deport 17 foreigners detained in an Assam detention center, observing that no offense has been registered against them.

Court’s Observation

A bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan took note of a report submitted by the State Legal Services Authority, which stated the presence of 17 declared foreigners in the Assam detention center.

“We are of the view that the Union of India must take immediate steps to deport these 17 foreigners as there are no offenses registered against them,” the bench stated.

Direction to State Legal Services Authority

The top court, in April, had directed the State Legal Services Authority of Assam to inform it about the foreigners detained for over two years, noting that numerous foreigners have been in detention centers for extended periods. It had also instructed the legal services authority to form a team to visit the detention centers and assess the facilities available to foreigners.

The apex court was hearing a plea seeking the release of individuals who have spent more than two years in detention centers in the state.
