SC Refers To ‘Justice At Doorstep’, Refuses To Hear Plea Against Shifting Of Court In Andhra Pradesh

The Supreme Court on Friday declined to hear a plea challenging the relocation of a sessions court from Machilipatnam to Avanigadda in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district, stressing that courts are meant for litigants, not just lawyers.

“Courts are not only for lawyers—they are for litigants. We talk about justice at doorsteps, about gram nyayalayas,” remarked a bench of Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran.

Petitioner Withdraws After Bench Remarks

Following the bench’s observation, petitioner Buragadda Ashok Kumar withdrew his plea, which had contested the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s decision to move the VI Additional District and Sessions Court to Avanigadda.

Court Favoured Public Interest

Earlier, Andhra Pradesh High Court rejected objections from the Machilipatnam Bar Association, stating that while the shift might inconvenience lawyers, it would serve litigants better by improving access to justice.

The top court’s remarks underscore its support for decentralizing justice and enhancing accessibility, even if such moves face resistance from the legal fraternity.
