SC Rejects BJP Candidate’s Plea Over Nomination Paper Cancellation

The Supreme Court has declined to consider a plea from Debasish Dhar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate for the Birbhum Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal, regarding the cancellation of his nomination papers.

The Bench

A bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and KV Viswanathan refused to entertain Dhar’s plea.

Senior advocate Nidhesh Gupta, representing Dhar, mentioned the plea before a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Monday, seeking an urgent hearing.

‘No-Due Certificate’

The nomination papers of former IPS officer Debasish Dhar, as the BJP candidate from West Bengal’s Birbhum parliamentary seat, were canceled due to his failure to produce the ‘no-due certificate’.

Voting for the remaining constituencies of West Bengal is scheduled for May 4, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1. The counting of votes is set for June 4, with the election in Birbhum scheduled for May 13, 2024.
