SC Rejects Handcuff Election Symbol for Candidates with Criminal Records

The Supreme Court on Friday declined to entertain a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that sought an election symbol of handcuffs for candidates with criminal backgrounds.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, stated that they were not inclined to entertain the matter, deeming it a policy issue.

“How can we do it? This is a policy matter. We can’t ask them to put an election symbol of handcuffs. You withdraw it,” remarked the bench. As the bench expressed its disinclination to pursue the matter, the counsel chose to withdraw the case, resulting in its dismissal as withdrawn.

The Apex Court was hearing the PIL filed by Sudheer, who sought an election symbol of handcuffs for candidates with criminal antecedents.
