SC Reprimands Delhi Government Over Delay in Delhi-Meerut RRTS Project Funding

The Supreme Court on Monday reprimanded the Delhi government for the delay in executing the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transport System (RRTS) project and for not providing its share of funds for the project.

During the hearing of a plea regarding the project’s implementation delay, a bench comprising Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia remarked that if the Aam Aadmi Party government could allocate ₹1,100 crore towards advertising in the past three years, it should be able to allocate funds for infrastructure projects as well.

The bench directed the State government to pay the overdue amount for the project within two months.

The Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) is a semi-high-speed rail corridor connecting Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut. It is one of the three rapid rail corridors planned under Phase I of the RapidX project.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court had criticized the Delhi government for the delay in contributing its share of funds for the project and instructed the government to provide a detailed account of its advertising spending over the past three financial years. The Delhi government had claimed a lack of funds for the project but subsequently submitted the required information as per the court’s order.

During the recent hearing, the Senior Counsel for the Delhi government assured that funds would be allotted for the project.
