The Supreme Court of India has returned to its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges with the appointment of three new justices.
Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud administered the oath of office to Justices Satish Chandra Sharma, Augustine George Masih, and Sandeep Mehta in a ceremony held at the Supreme Court’s Additional Complex.
Background Of The Appointees
- Justice Satish Chandra Sharma served as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court before his elevation to the Supreme Court.

Justice Augustine George Masih was the Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.

Justice Sandeep Mehta held the position of Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.
Their appointments were recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium and subsequently approved by the government.
Implications Of The Appointment
With the addition of these three judges, the Supreme Court now operates at its full capacity, which is expected to enhance its efficiency in handling pending cases and reduce the backlog of litigation.
