SC Seeks Email On Ghaziabad 'Dharam Sansad' Plea

The Supreme Court on Monday directed a group of former bureaucrats and social activists to email a request for urgent listing of their plea against a ‘Dharam Sansad’ in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.

The event, organized by the Yati Narsinghanand Foundation, is scheduled to take place at the Shiv-Shakti temple complex in Dasna from Tuesday to Saturday.

The petitioners, represented by lawyer Prashant Bhushan, raised concerns over an alleged “open call for the genocide of Muslims” made in connection with the event. “I will consider. Please send an email,” Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna said during the hearing. Bhushan emphasized the urgency of the matter, as the ‘Dharam Sansad’ was set to commence the following day.

The plea also includes a contempt petition against the Ghaziabad district administration and Uttar Pradesh Police for allegedly disregarding the Supreme Court’s earlier orders. These directives had mandated authorities to take suo motu action against individuals or groups engaging in hate speech or communal activities.

The petitioners include prominent figures such as activist Aruna Roy, retired IAS officer Ashok Kumar Sharma, and former IFS officers Deb Mukarji and Navrekha Sharma. They accuse local authorities of “willful and deliberate contempt” of the court’s orders by permitting the event to proceed.

Concerns surrounding the ‘Dharam Sansad’ stem from a previous controversial gathering in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, where alleged hate speeches led to criminal proceedings against several individuals, including Yati Narsinghanand. The incident sparked widespread outrage and raised alarm over the rise of communal rhetoric at such events.

As the Ghaziabad event looms, the petitioners hope the Supreme Court will intervene to prevent further escalation of hate-driven activities. The case highlights growing concerns over the role of law enforcement and local administration in addressing hate speech and maintaining communal harmony.
