SC Seeks UP Bar Council Response on Plea Challenging High Enrolment Fee

The Supreme Court on Friday sought a response from the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh regarding a petition challenging the high fee for enrolment as an advocate.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud along with Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, issued notice to the bar body and scheduled the matter for a hearing in two weeks.

The Apex Court was hearing a petition filed by a law graduate of Banaras Hindu University’s Faculty of Law, who stated that he is required to pay an enrolment fee of Rs 16,665, with an additional Rs 5,000 for expedited processing of his application within a day.

Upon inquiry by the bench about the petitioner’s suggestion for a reasonable fee, the law graduate responded that Rs 750 should be charged, as per the provisions of the Advocates Act.
