SC seeks West Bengal Gov’s Response on Plea Alleging Inaction in Assenting Bills

The Supreme Court has sought the response of the West Bengal Governor’s office to a plea concerning alleged inaction in granting assent to the bills passed by the Assembly.

The Bench

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala issued the order while considering a plea filed by Sayan Mukherjee.

The court has issued notice to the Principal Secretary to the Governor of West Bengal, as well as to the Centre and the West Bengal government.

Calcutta High Court

The petition was filed through advocate on record Shipra Ghosh. The petition challenges the Calcutta High Court order wherein the High Court stayed its previous direction and stated it will hear the maintainability of the petition.

Various state governments, including Kerala and Punjab, have previously approached the Supreme Court against the governor’s inaction in clearing bills passed by the House.
