SC To Hear Manipur Government’s Petition On Internet Restrictions

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear the petition filed by the Manipur government on July 17.

The state government is challenging a high court decision that relaxed the restrictions on internet usage imposed since May 3 due to ethnic clashes.

The state, represented by advocate Kanu Agrawal, requested an urgent listing of the appeal, expressing concerns that the relaxation of curbs could be misused by miscreants and disrupt the return to normalcy.

The government expressed concerns that miscreants may exploit the relaxed curbs to misuse internet-based communication facilities, posing a risk to public order. The state defended the restrictions, stating that they were neither excessive nor disproportionate to the present situation.

The Biren Singh government said that in a temporary shutdown of internet services in any region, only internet/data services were suspended.

It clarified that only internet and data services were temporarily suspended in the affected region.
