‘Sorry State of Affairs’: SC Criticizes Failure to Manage Municipal Solid Waste in Delhi

The Supreme Court criticized authorities on Monday for their failure to manage municipal solid waste generated in Delhi, terming it a “sorry state of affairs”. The apex court noted that in the national capital, 3,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste generated remains untreated every day.

“What is the solution to that,” questioned a bench of justices AS Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan to the lawyers representing various authorities, including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).

The court emphasized that the issue of processing municipal solid waste was “very vital” for the national capital and urged that no politics should be involved in addressing it.

The hearing in the matter has been adjourned and will be resumed later in the day.

During a previous hearing on April 22, the apex court had expressed shock at the revelation that 3,000 tonnes out of the 11,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste generated in Delhi daily was left untreated. Reviewing a report from the Commission of Air Quality Management (CAQM) on pollution in the national capital region and surrounding areas, the court highlighted the seriousness of the issue.
