The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended transferring Justice Shamim Ahmed from the Allahabad High Court to the Madras High Court.
The Collegium, consisting of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, and Justice Hrishikesh Roy, proposed the transfer after rejecting Justice Ahmed’s request for reconsideration.
“We have considered Mr. Justice Shamim Ahmed’s request in his representation. The Collegium does not find any merit in his request. Therefore, the Collegium resolves to reiterate its recommendation dated August 21, 2024, to transfer Mr. Justice Shamim Ahmed to the Madras High Court,” the Collegium resolution stated.
According to the Collegium’s statement, the transfer was proposed on August 21, 2024, following consultations with a Supreme Court judge familiar with the affairs of the Allahabad High Court, the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, and the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.
Justice Shamim Ahmed graduated in Law from Allahabad University and was enrolled as an advocate on April 17, 1993, with the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh. He practiced Civil, Constitutional, Service, Labour, Company, and Criminal Law at the Allahabad High Court and served as central government counsel there from August 4, 2004, until his elevation.
He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court on December 12, 2019, and took the oath as a Permanent Judge on March 26, 2021.
