Supreme Court Declines To Rule On Lalit Modi’s ‘Scurrilous’ Remarks Against Senior Advocate

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to rule on a petition alleging that former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi made “scurrilous” remarks about former Attorney General and Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi in a social media post.

A bench of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice M.M. Sundresh stated that the parties are mature enough not to make such statements and directed the lawyers to resolve the matter out of the court.

“It is nothing but extension of outburst of a family member. Don’t take it too far. Whenever you start fighting out in public, it is always detrimental. We are not passing orders but you use your good office to ensure that remedial measures are taken,” the bench observed orally.

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal stated before the bench that there was an undertaking that there would be no posts while mediation was taking place. “Comments are being made during the meditation. These should be removed. “This is a violation of court orders,” Sibal declared.

Appearing for Lalit Modi, Senior Advocate Harish Salve stated that there was no violation of the court order and that this was simply an angry outburst.

It is to be noted that Senior Advocate Rohatgi is one of the counsels representing Bina Modi, (mother of Lalit Modi) in the property dispute going on between her and the former IPL head. In this regard, the Supreme Court even appointed former judge Justice R.V. Raveendran as a mediator to settle the Modi family property issue.

The top court was informed that the parties’ mediation process was in progress.

In an Instagram post, Lalit Modi made some remarks about Rohatgi. Later, he allegedly apologised to the senior advocate in another post.
