Supreme Court to Hear Same-Sex Marriage Related Petitions on January 6th

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that it will hear the petitions related to same-sex marriage on January 6. The petitioner’s counsel sought an early hearing of the matter before Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, saying it was a matter that pertained to same-sex and same-sex marriages. Similar cases are pending in the Delhi and Calcutta High Courts. Hence the transfer petition has been filed here. Then Chief Justice said, we will hear the matter on January 6.

Earlier on December 14, the Supreme Court issued a notice to the Central Government asking whether same-sex marriage can be recognized under the Special Marriage Act? The Supreme Court was hearing a petition seeking recognition of same-sex marriage. Along with this, the Supreme Court had also issued notice on a transfer petition seeking transfer of a similar petition pending in the Delhi High Court to the Supreme Court.

Apart from Hyderabad-based gay couple Supriyo Chakraborty and Abhay Dang, Partha Firoz Mehrotra and Uday Raj have also filed petitions for the rights of the gay community. The petitioners have said that they have cited their fundamental right to marry each other and sought an appropriate order from the court to do so.
