Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President and popular Tamil actor Vijay has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. His petition adds to a growing list of legal challenges against the controversial amendment.
Court has scheduled a hearing on April 16 to consider a total of ten petitions filed against the Act. The bench will be led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, alongside Justices Sanjay Kumar and KV Viswanathan.
Case Insights
Several prominent political leaders and organizations have also approached the apex court over the same issue. The petitioners are AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, Congress MP Mohd Jawed, Delhi MLA Amanatullah Khan, and TMC MP Mahua Moitra.
Others include the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), RJD MP Manoj Jha, and Samajwadi Party MP Zia Ur Rehman.
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 has faced sharp criticism from various quarters, with opponents arguing that it infringes on fundamental rights and alters the original framework governing waqf properties.
While the government has defended the amendment as a move to streamline and modernize waqf management, critics claim it centralizes power and undermines community rights.
