Teachers Recruitment Scam: TMC MLA Manik Bhattacharya Withdraws Bail Plea from SC

Manik Bhattacharya

TMC MLA Manik Bhattacharya, incarcerated in a case linked to alleged irregularities in the recruitment of primary school teachers in West Bengal, has withdrawn his bail plea from the Supreme Court.

Fresh Plea in Calcutta HC

Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal permitted Bhattacharya to submit a fresh plea with additional documents to the High Court.

The bench instructed, ‘The High Court may promptly review the petitioner’s submission on its merits and in accordance with the law.’

Arrested by Enforcement Directorate

Bhattacharya, the former chairperson of the West Bengal Board of Primary Education, was apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on October 11 last year following prolonged interrogation.

The probe agency claimed the Palashipara MLA was uncooperative during the investigation.

The apex court on December 15, 2023, issued notice to the ED regarding Bhattacharya’s appeal against the November 16 Calcutta High Court ruling rejecting his bail plea.

It is to be noted that in February 16 this year, the top court had granted bail to Bhattacharya’s son Souvik in a money laundering case associated with the matter.
