U.P Gangster Law: SC Grants Interim Bail To U.P MLA Abbas Ansari

In a relief to Uttar Pradesh MLA Abbas Ansari, the Supreme Court on Friday granted interim bail to him under the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986.

While granting inteim bail, the top court bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Kotiswar has imposed certain bail conditions.

The condition includes- Ansari cannot leave Uttar Pradesh without prior permission of the Special Judge, Trial Court.

After six weeks, the Supreme Court has sought a status report on Ansari’s conduct and is likely to review his bail.

Other Bail Conditions

Abbas Ansari should not make any statements regarding pending cases, and the session court in Chitrakoot will determine the bail bond amount.

He will have to stay at his official residence in Lucknow and if he intends to travel to to Mau (his constituency), prior permission from the Trial Court and district police will be required.

Ansari has been in jail since November 4, 2022, and has already been granted bail in other cases. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court concluded that Abbas should be granted interim bail.

Abbas Ansari, also a MLA from Mau, has an FIR lodged against him under the Gangster Act in Chitrakoot.
