‘Unnecessary Adjournments’: SC Directs Delhi HC to Decide Satyendar Jain’s Plea on July 9

The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Delhi High Court to decide the bail plea of Satyendar Jain, former AAP minister, in a money laundering case.
A vacation bench comprising Justices Manoj Misra and S V N Bhatti emphasized that bail matters should not face unnecessary adjournments and directed the high court to adjudicate Jain’s plea at the next hearing.
The incarcerated former minister had approached the Supreme Court challenging the six-week adjournment granted by the high court on his bail plea. He argued that a similar issue was already pending before the Supreme Court and requested his plea to be tagged with it.
On 28th May, the Delhi High Court had sought the Enforcement Directorate’s response and ordered the filing of a status report in the case. The court also sought the nominal roll of Jain from prison and scheduled further hearings for July 9.
Satyendar Jain was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on May 30, 2022, under charges of money laundering, following a CBI FIR lodged against him in 2017 under the Prevention of Corruption Act. He had previously been granted regular bail by a trial court on September 6, 2019, in the CBI case.
