“We Don’t Expect Pat On Our Backs”: SC to IMA

In an interview, the president of the Indian Medical Association, Dr. RV Ashokan, remarked that the Supreme Court’s criticism of the practices of the Indian Medical Association and the private doctors is unfortunate.

The court has taken notice of these remarks made by the IMA president and has condemned him for speaking regarding a matter that is sub-judice.

On May 7, the Supreme Court slammed Indian Medical Association (IMA) President Dr. RV Asokan for his statements about the court’s observation on doctors’ conduct. This comes after Patanjali’s Ayurveda’s MD, Acharya Balkrishna, filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking action against Indian Medical Association (IMA) President Dr. RV Asokan for his comments on the court’s observation on doctors’ conduct. Balkrishna argued in the application that Asokan’s deliberate statements conflict directly with the immediate proceedings and the process of justice.

“These statements are condemnable in nature and are a clear attempt to lower the dignity of this Honorable Court and the majesty of law in the eyes of the public,” the plea states, requesting legal action against Asokan. Senior advocate PS Patwalia, appearing for the Indian Medical Association, argued that the IMA president fell for a leading question and that the remark was taken out of context.

In response, the Supreme Court stated, “This court does not expect any pats on the back. This court has had its fair share of criticism.”

Patwalia requested time until next week to submit a submission on behalf of his client.
