The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a response from the Centre on former JNU student Umar Khalid’s plea challenging various provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
A bench of Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice Bela M Trivedi, said it would hear similar petitions regarding this issue on November 22, 2023.
Furthermore, the Apex Court said it would also hear Umar Khalid’s plea for bail in a case filed under the anti-terror law UAPA on the same date.
The case pertains to his alleged involvement in the conspiracy behind the February 2020 riots in northeast Delhi. The court decided to consolidate these cases, stating, “Let them all be taken together.”
Umar Khalid, along with Sharjeel Imam and several others, faced charges under the anti-terror law UAPA and various sections of the Indian Penal Code. They were accused of being the “masterminds” behind the February 2020 riots, which resulted in 53 fatalities and over 700 injuries.
Umar Khalid, who was arrested by Delhi Police in September 2020, sought bail on the grounds that he had no criminal involvement in the violence and no “conspiratorial connect” with any other accused in the case.
