SC Denies Lawrence Bishnoi’s Plea Against SIT Formation and FIRs Over Jail Interview

Lawrence Bishnoi

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected a plea by jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s order to form a special investigation team (SIT) and register FIRs over his interview with a TV channel while in jail.

A bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and S.C. Sharma stated it was not inclined to interfere with the high court’s order. “Let it be investigated. It is a matter of investigation. There are 73 cases filed against you,” the bench remarked.

Bishnoi’s counsel argued that he was not heard before the order was passed and claimed that multiple witnesses had been examined with no findings. The apex court advised Bishnoi to approach the high court.

In December 2023, the high court had ordered the registration of FIRs and a probe by a special investigation team (SIT) led by IPS officer Prabodh Kumar into Bishnoi’s interview. The high court issued this order while addressing a suo motu matter related to the use of mobile phones by inmates within jail premises.

Lawrence Bishnoi is an accused in the 2022 murder of singer Sidhu Moosewala. In March of the previous year, a private news channel aired two interviews with Bishnoi.
