Samajwadi Party MP Ramji Lal Suman has approached the Allahabad High Court, seeking security and a fair investigation after his residence in Agra was allegedly attacked.
The incident followed controversial remarks he made in Parliament regarding Rajput ruler Rana Sanga, which sparked widespread outrage.
Controversy Over Historical Reference
The uproar began with Suman’s statement in Parliament on March 21, where he said, “Rana Sanga invited Mughal emperor Babur to India to defeat Ibrahim Lodi.”
He further stated that if Indian Muslims are repeatedly referred to as Babur’s descendants, then, “by the same logic, other communities can also be seen as descendants of a ‘traitor’ like Rana Sanga.”
This comment, which challenged traditional Rajput narratives, drew strong criticism from various Rajput organizations, including the Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha and the Karni Sena. The backlash escalated quickly.
Violence At Suman’s Residence
On March 26, members of the Karni Sena allegedly stormed and vandalized Suman’s house in Agra. In his court petition, Suman claimed the attackers were reacting to his remarks and have now issued fresh threats.
He said the Karni Sena has demanded a public apology and warned that if he fails to comply, they would launch another attack on April 12.
“They demanded an apology and threatened another assault if I failed to comply,” Suman said in his plea.
Appeal For Protection & Action
Fearing for his safety, the MP has urged the court to direct authorities to provide him with adequate security. He has also called for an unbiased investigation into the Agra incident and strict legal action against those responsible for the attack.
Suman mentioned he had already reached out to top constitutional authorities, including President Droupadi Murmu, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting protection. However, he received no response, prompting him to move to the court.
Court To Hear Plea Soon
Sources indicate that the Allahabad High Court is expected to hear the matter shortly. The situation highlights ongoing tensions surrounding historical narratives and the risks faced by public figures expressing controversial viewpoints.
As the legal process unfolds, the case could set an important precedent for how threats and violence related to political speech are handled in the country.
