The Delhi High Court has recently directed the MCD to consider setting up a dedicated helpline for reporting stray cattle issues.
Additionally, the Delhi Traffic Police has been instructed to monitor and report these incidents promptly. The court also urged the Delhi Government to form a Special Task Force to coordinate actions against the problem.
Justice Sanjeev Narula emphasized the need for dedicated helplines to facilitate quick responses and community involvement. He also directed the Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) to oversee and report stray cattle incidents.
The court’s directions came in response to a petition by Satish Sharma, a Saket District Court advocate, who raised concerns about the dangers posed by stray cattle on his daily commute. Sharma argued that despite numerous complaints, little action had been taken, leading to traffic disruptions and public safety risks.
The High Court acknowledged the problem and urged the Delhi Government to create a task force with representatives from the MCD, Delhi Police, and other relevant agencies. This task force will work to coordinate efforts, share resources, and address the issue of stray cattle more effectively.
While the authorities have taken steps such as sealing illegal dairies and disconnecting utility services, the court noted that these measures are insufficient. It stressed the need for a comprehensive approach that includes regular monitoring, community engagement, and stricter enforcement of regulations against negligent dairy owners.
The court highlighted the seriousness of the problem, stating that stray cattle on roads pose a significant safety hazard and disrupt the lives of many commuters. It called for more robust and coordinated action to address this ongoing issue.
